Lena Dunham is doing it, Millie Mackintosh is doing it, Irina Shayk is doing it… the ‘sexy’ sports bra craze is in danger of becoming a full-blown trend!
It started, naturally enough, in the gym. When you’re getting hot and sweaty (and have the abs to show for it), it makes sense to strip down to your sports bra and shorts. But over the past year, more and more celebrities have been spotted showing off the look outside of the gym – in full view of paparazzi or on social media. As the trend has grown, the sports bras in question have become noticeable ‘sexier’, featuring pretty straps, fashionable cut-outs and bright patterns. So is it worth a go? Here are a few of the key pros and cons:
They are beautiful. You can’t deny that these sexy versions are much better than the off-white, wide-strapped sports bras of yore. And you can co-ordinate (or clash) them with your sportswear.
You don’t tend to get the same level of support with ‘sexy’ sports bras, especially if you are a C cup or above. Wide straps and breathable material are essential when choosing a good sports bra, but these can be easily overlooked in the name of fashion.
When you’re in a sweaty and crowded spin class or hot yoga session, it’s a relief to be able to rip off your t-shirt safe in the knowledge that your bra is stylish enough to pass for an alternative top.
Over-designed sports bras risk becoming extremely uncomfortable when they are subjected to actual exercise. Lattice straps and mesh inserts can dig into the skin and become abrasive, which sort of defeats the whole purpose of wearing a sports bra in the first place.
You can show off your figure – because no matter what size you are or how many muscle groups you worked out today, your body is your own and it is something to be proud of.
